This Thanksgiving we were again blessed be be able to
prepare a special Thanksgiving dinner for the patients,
families and staff on the PolyTrauma Unit and others at
James A. Haley VA Hospital.
These men and women are very near and dear to my heart as
my brother, Cpl. Dave Durrance USMC was a patient there in
2006 after sustaining a TBI and other medical problems that,
according to all the doctors that initially treated him,
should have been fatal. Well, God had a much different plan
for him and although he is still disabled with some physical
limitations, he has since married my beautiful sister-in-law
Kylie had their first child, Gavin and are now expecting
another addition to the family in June.
Dave constantly shares his testimony, and continues to
touch the lives of so many. But during his stay at the VA,
we witnessed an amazing group of people. Therapists, nurses,
doctors and other staff that refuse to give up on these
troops. Families, like ours, that fought alongside of our
loved ones in what would be the most difficult battle some
of us would ever face. Soldiers, like my brother, seeing
their injuries as yet another battle. They fight every day
with all they have in them to continue to be the best of the
best! And as I know from personal experience, it’s a long
road. But it is one we are determined that they will not
walk alone.
With an overwhelming response from family, friends and
co-workers, this year we were able to provide a full home
cooked Thanksgiving dinner that included Turkey, Ham,
Stuffing, Mashed Potatoes, Gravy, Green Bean Casserole,
Sweet Potato Casserole, Macaroni & Cheese, Dinner Rolls,
Pumpkin Pies, Apple Pie, cookies, juice and Soft Drinks. We
also distributed Thanksgiving cards that were filled with
loving thoughts.
In addition to the wonderful meal and cards, we were also
able to present a check for $350.00 to the Haley House. The
Haley House was my parents and sister–in-law’s home for the
months my brother was at James Haley. There are so many
little things that we take for granted, but during a family
crisis can be what gives you the strength to face another
day. A hot shower, a prepared meal instead of fast food, a
day room to just sit and collect your thoughts…. The Haley
House serves many families every day, and it was a blessing
to be able to contribute!!!!
